PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ South Dakota lawmakers have started to put
together a state budget without knowing whether they will get an
extra $36 million in federal aid to make the job easier.
Leaders of the Republican majority say the Joint Appropriations
Committee will meet Friday to consider proposals to cut spending.
But the committee will not finish work on the budget until March
29, when lawmakers return to Pierre for a final day to consider any
vetoes issued by Gov. Mike Rounds.
Lawmakers hope Congress gives final approval to extra money for
Medicaid before the Legislature has to pass its budget.
Rounds says if the Legislature balances the budget by cutting
spending, the state will not get the extra federal aid because it
will not be able to show a need for the money.
