SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) _ U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin
plans to give to charity political contributions she has received
from Charles Rangel, her embattled House colleague.
The South Dakota Democrat estimates the total at about $17,000.
She hasn't decided which charities it will go to.
Rangel, D-N.Y., relinquished his post as chairman of the
tax-writing Ways and Means Committee after an ethics committee
found that he had broken House rules on accepting gifts.
Republicans earlier had called on Herseth Sandlin to give away
her Rangel contributions and criticized her for not being quick to
do so. Herseth Sandlin is up for re-election this year. Three
Republicans are vying for the chance to oppose her: state Rep.
Kristi Noem of Castlewood, state Rep. Blake Curd of Sioux Falls and
Secretary of State Chris Nelson.
