PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ South Dakota's budget problems could be
solved with the help of extra federal money that Congress likely
will provide to states.
The U.S. Senate has approved a measure that would give states
more federal money for Medicaid, the state-federal program that
pays medical expenses for poor people. The Senate and the House
will seek to agree on the measure.
In the meantime, the South Dakota Legislature has been
struggling to pass a state budget in the face of rising costs and
declining revenue. The Republican majority has proposed budgets
aimed at preventing the use of $40 million in reserves next year.
The extra federal Medicaid money could give South Dakota
approximately $30 million to help balance the budget.
