PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ A state-funded college scholarship program
would be expanded in three years to include home-schooled students
under a compromise offered in the South Dakota Legislature.
Students in public and private schools qualify for Opportunity
Scholarships by taking certain high school courses and scoring 24
on the ACT college entrance exam. The program is designed to keep
the brightest graduates in the state.
The House and Senate couldn't agree on the specifics of adding
home-schooled students. A conference committee on Thursday settled
on an ACT score of 28 for them to qualify and expanded the program
to include students who don't take all the required courses in high
school but who score 28 on their ACT.
The compromise bill that's headed back to the Senate and House
would delay the changes until July 2013.
